Over 18’s only!
More adults are turning to martial arts — not to fight or compete, but to feel capable again in everyday life.
At Five Rings Martial Arts, most people on the mats are complete beginners: busy professionals, parents, and people getting back into movement after years away. Many haven’t trained in a long time.
This isn’t old-school, aggressive martial arts.
Our training is practical, supportive, and designed specifically for adults.
You’ll work on:
practical self-protection skills
switching off stress after work
rebuilding strength, mobility, and coordination
developing quiet, grounded confidence
You don’t need to be fit, flexible, or experienced. You just need to show up. Classes are small, coached closely, and paced so you can progress comfortably without pressure.
For many people, this becomes the thing they actually stick with — because they’re learning a real skill, seeing progress, and training alongside others who keep them accountable.

FAQ
I’m unfit or out of shape — can I still join?
Absolutely. Most people who start with us haven’t trained in years (if ever). Our classes are designed so you can go at your own pace, build fitness gradually, and progress safely. You don’t need to be fit to start — you get fit by starting.
Do I need any previous martial arts experience?
Not at all. Our training is beginner-friendly, welcoming, and structured so you learn the fundamentals step-by-step. You’ll never be thrown into deep water or expected to “keep up” — we meet you where you’re at.
What actually happens in a class?
Each session includes:
A simple warm-up
Practical self-defence techniques
Controlled partner drills
Pad work and striking (no pressure to spar)
A focus on mindset, confidence and staying calm under pressure
You’ll leave feeling challenged, energised, and clear-headed — not overwhelmed.
Will I get hurt? How safe is the training?
Your safety is our top priority. Training is controlled, supervised, and tailored to your level. There’s no ego and no forced sparring. We teach real-world skills while keeping you protected at all times.
What should I wear or bring to my first session?
Just wear a t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms or shorts. Bring some water and an open mind. We’ll take care of the rest — no special gear needed for your first few sessions.
Is this suitable for people my age?
Yes — people in their late 30s, 40s and 50s are the majority of our members. This isn’t a kids’ club or a competitive fight gym. It’s a place for people with real-world responsibilities to get stronger, feel safer, and enjoy a powerful break from daily stress.
Do you cover real-world self-defence?
Yes. Everything we teach is built around effective, practical, real-life scenarios — not choreography or sport techniques. We focus on skill development and adaptability. You’ll learn how to protect yourself and your family with straightforward skills you can rely on under pressure.
I feel a bit nervous about starting — is that normal?
Totally. Most people feel the same before their first session. Within minutes you’ll realise the atmosphere is friendly, supportive, and ego-free. Everyone here started as a beginner, and you’ll be made to feel welcome from the second you walk in. If you still feel nervous about getting started, why not see if you can get a friend to come with you?
Do I have to spar or fight?
No. Sparring is optional and only introduced when (and if) you feel ready. Many students train for years without ever sparring. Our focus is on controlled drills, pad work, and practical self-defence — not fighting or competition. That being said, if you want to progress through the ranking system, then some sparring will be required at more advanced levels. However this is fully controlled with full protective equipment. We aren’t training to hurt each other, only to build confidence and skill under pressure.
